Coinbase in Europe: MiCA Licence and Market Position

Coinbase is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges by trading volume and the first major US-headquartered exchange to list its shares on a public stock exchange. In Europe, it has pursued regulatory authorisation more aggressively than most of its peers, culminating in a MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) licence granted through its Irish subsidiary.

Founding and Corporate History

Coinbase was founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam in San Francisco, California. Armstrong, a former Airbnb software engineer, and Ehrsam, a former Goldman Sachs trader, built the company initially as a simple Bitcoin wallet and brokerage. The company received early backing from Y Combinator and later from Andreessen Horowitz, Union Square Ventures, and the New York Stock Exchange, among others.

In April 2021, Coinbase completed a direct listing on the Nasdaq under the ticker COIN, becoming the first major cryptocurrency company to go public in the United States. The listing valued the company at approximately $86 billion on its first day of trading, though the valuation has fluctuated significantly with broader crypto market cycles.

Fred Ehrsam departed Coinbase in 2017 and later co-founded Paradigm, a crypto-focused investment firm. Brian Armstrong has remained CEO. The company's current leadership team includes Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas and Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal, who has been a prominent voice in the company's ongoing legal disputes with US regulators.

European Operations and Regulatory Strategy

Coinbase established a significant European presence well before MiCA came into force. Its primary European entity is Coinbase Europe Limited, incorporated in Ireland. Ireland's status as an EU member state with a well-developed financial services regulatory framework made it an attractive base for EU-wide passporting.

Prior to MiCA, Coinbase registered with several national regulators across Europe. It obtained registration as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) with the Central Bank of Ireland, and separately registered with regulators in Germany, the Netherlands, and other jurisdictions under pre-MiCA national frameworks.

MiCA CASP Licence

The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) came into full effect for Crypto-Asset Service Providers on 30 December 2024. Under MiCA, exchanges and other crypto service providers operating in the EU must obtain a CASP licence from a national competent authority in an EU member state. Once granted, the licence can be passported across all 27 EU member states.

Coinbase received a MiCA CASP licence through its Irish entity, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland. This makes it one of the first major global exchanges to hold a full MiCA authorisation. The licence covers a range of services including the operation of a trading platform for crypto-assets, the exchange of crypto-assets for fiat currency, and the custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients.

The Irish authorisation allows Coinbase to offer its services to retail and institutional clients across the EU without requiring separate national licences in each member state — a significant operational advantage over competitors that have not yet completed the MiCA authorisation process.

Market Position in Europe

Coinbase operates Coinbase Advanced (formerly Coinbase Pro) for professional and institutional traders, and its standard retail platform for individual users. In Europe, the exchange supports trading in a wide range of crypto-assets and offers EUR-denominated trading pairs.

The company has also developed Coinbase Prime, an institutional-grade custody and trading platform, which it markets to European asset managers, hedge funds, and corporate treasury teams. Institutional custody has become an increasingly important revenue line as European institutional interest in digital assets has grown.

Coinbase's European revenue is not separately disclosed in its public filings, but the company has described Europe as one of its key growth markets. It has invested in local compliance infrastructure, including dedicated compliance officers and legal teams in Ireland and Germany.

Compliance Posture and Regulatory Engagement

Coinbase has been notably active in engaging with regulators and policymakers on crypto regulation. In the United States, the company has been involved in high-profile legal disputes with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over the classification of certain crypto-assets as securities. In Europe, the company has generally taken a more cooperative posture, engaging with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and national regulators during the MiCA consultation process.

The company publishes transparency reports and has implemented Travel Rule compliance — a requirement under the EU's Transfer of Funds Regulation (TFR) that mandates the collection and transmission of originator and beneficiary information for crypto-asset transfers above certain thresholds.
